Stem Cells and Obesity: The Alternative for Weight Loss

stem cells and obesity

Obesity has become an epidemic across all walks of life.  A trigger for so many diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, and cancer, it’s one of the biggest health threats facing people today.

Patients have tried all kinds of treatments, diets, exercise programs, and even surgery to curve it, but often to little avail.  Is there another alternative?

Stem Cells May Hold the Key

Over the past two decades, stem cell therapy has become a mainstay of modern medical treatment for a range of diseases affecting every part of the body.  Stem cells—which are special cells extracted from sources such as bone marrow—have the ability to re-create new tissue in the body, repairing damage caused by disease or injury.

The healthy transplanted cells grow and adapt to their new environment, speeding the body’s healing process.

It’s now been determined that stem cells can also be useful for fighting obesity.  Their role is to combat the effects of white adipose tissue (fat), which stores excess energy, by speeding the growth of brown adipose tissue, which actually burns unused energy.

The higher concentration of brown adipose kicks off several fat-burning processes, including:

  • Boosting overall metabolism, which increases the conversion of stored fat into energy.
  • Reducing insulin resistance, the primary factor behind diabetes.
  • Decreasing lipids (blood fats) that contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Once the body’s metabolic “thermostat” has been re-set, it begins to use calories more efficiency, burning fat instead of storing it.   Stem cells serve as a catalyst in this process, giving the body the additional help, it needs to attain—and keep—a healthier body weight.

How It’s Done

Stem cell therapy is just about as natural as it can get.  Put simply, it’s taking cells from one part of your body and depositing them into another.

This process is called referred to as “autologous,” stem cell therapy, because it uses cells from only the patient, rather than from an umbilical cord or embryo, or another person.

A big advantage of autologous cell therapy is that the risk for a bad reaction or cell rejection is practically nil, since the patient’s receiving his or her own cells.

Prior to extraction, the patient is evaluated by the doctor who will order routine lab work, such as a complete blood count (CBC).  This is done as a precautionary measure;  most people don’t experience complications during therapy.  Vitamin infusions may also be given as an added boost before the procedure.

Stem cells can be extracted in one of two ways.  The first method is to draw them directly from bone marrow.  This is done with a needle and under anesthesia.  A newer, and less invasive way is to draw the cells from the bloodstream, a process called peripheral stem cell collection.

This procedure takes only a few hours but requires a special injection, given a few days in advance of the procedure.  The injected medication causes the stem cells to travel from the marrow to the blood so they can be taken from a simple blood draw.  It’s virtually painless as it just involves the stick of an IV needle.

Aftercare

Patients receiving peripheral stem cell procedures have few restrictions following the procedure, usually just a day or so of rest to adjust to the changes in the body.  Individuals who donate their own stem cells directly from their bone marrow, however, take longer to recover, as the collection process is technically a surgery.

The most common risk is infection, which can be avoided by keeping the extraction site clean while it heals.

Stem Cells–Part of a Weight Loss Plan

To maximize its effectiveness, stem cell implantation for weight loss should be part of an overall plan, including a healthy diet and exercise program.

As the individual begins to lose weight, it’s important to make lifestyle changes that will help maintain the loss, otherwise the weight may return.  A stem cell transplant, while a tremendous medical breakthrough, is not a “magic” weight loss pill.

Rather, it’s an opportunity to establish a pattern that will continue to provide health benefits long-term and give patients a better quality of life.  And it’s well worth the effort.
