Stem Cell Therapy for Asthma
Stem cell therapy can help delay disease progression and alleviate some of the life threatening symptoms of asthma (and other lung diseases) by regenerating the lung epithelium and restoring glandular function. In addition, reducing inflammation factors help reduce asthma episodes. Several case studies in stem cells for asthma, show that using mesenchymal adult stem cells have proved effective in long-term treatment for asthma. At the beginning of the trial, they had elevated levels of C reactive protein (CRP). At a 2-year follow-up, the CRP levels had decreased markedly.
How is Stem Cell treatment for Asthma?
ProgenCell has developed a protocol which has been successful for patients with Asthma, improving their quality of life. To start a protocol, the patient requires a previous evaluation to determine if he/she is a good candidate for the therapy, the evaluation is made based on the patient’s medical history. Also it is helpful to know if the patient has any imaging, lab work or medical reports that can be added to the evaluation for an accurate evaluation. After the doctor has evaluated this information he is able to make a proper recommendation of treatment. Usually the protocol consists in a 4-day treatment, during this time the patient receives a series of Vitamin and Mineral IV Infusions along with a Stem Cell IV Infusion.
The source of the stem cell is recommended by the doctor, but we adjust to the patient’s medical needs. For our treatments we use autologous or allogeneic stem cells, autologous stem cells are taken from the patient’s own bone marrow, on the other hand, allogeneic stem cells are taken usually from sources like umbilical cord or placenta.
After the doctor is done with your evaluation and the recommendation has been provided, a regenerative medicine scientific liaison will contact you with the recommended protocol along with a quotation.
Although stem cells can be obtained from different sources, such as: bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, adipose tissue and even teeth, we prefer to use fresh, autologous bone marrow; as it contains many stimulating factors and growth factors. As research studies advance and more beneficial qualities for regenerating and repairing tissue are discovered, we are becoming more and more convinced of its potential for anti-aging, prevention and for treating a wide variety of degenerative conditions. That is why we want to bring the benefits of stem cells to all those patients with a medical condition, even when traditional treatments have had little or no results. If you have any additional questions at that time, a phone call with the doctor can be arranged.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a condition which mainly affects the lungs, causing a temporary narrowing of air passages due to inflammation. Asthma affects about 26 million people in the U.S. and accounts for around 2 million ER visits each year. Asthma can be properly controlled and treated through medicines and inhalers, but it still poses a danger and sometimes even life threatening. This condition consists of 3 basic stages:
- Airway obstruction
- Airway inflammation
- Airway irritability
Asthma can affect anyone but it mainly affects children, the factors of the disease can be due to genetics, environment or occupation.
What are the main symptoms for asthma?
Asthma is mainly known for causing “attacks” which are an acute onset of difficulty in breathing characterized by:
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
It’s very important to understand how to control your symptoms by avoiding to do things that tend to trigger an asthma attack. Every patient has different symptoms and triggers but some of them may be related to the following causes.
What are the causes of asthma?
Asthma may be caused by different factor for each patient, although there are many unknown causes the following are the most common related to the disease:
- Infections, like sinusitis and flu
- Allergens, like pollen, mold, dust etc.
- Smoking
- Exercise (exercise induced asthma)
- Fluctuation in temperature (hot and cold weather)
- Drug induced

Other Treatments for Asthma
There are different treatment options for Asthma, although one of the most common treatments is the use of “Bronchodilator”, these medications are specifically to help the patient increase their airflow into the lungs. Mainly asthma is characterized by the hyperactivity of the bronchi which means that the bronchi gets over-stimulated by multiple allergenic factors like dust, pollen, etc. this hyperactivity reduces the capacity of the patients to breath which leads them to what we know as a “crisis” or “asthma attack”. Also, there are other medications to help prevent the symptoms of asthma.
Other recommendations are not based in medication but in the decisions that the patients make, sometimes the attacks or crisis may be caused by the patient’s lifestyle. For example, an asthma attack may be triggered from the cold, so the recommendation would be for the patient to stay warm or it can also be triggered by smoke, so the recommendation would be not to smoke or be around smoke.
Even the Center of Disease Control has created a program that has been helping millions of people with asthma since 1999 which is named “National Asthma Control Program”. The goal of the program is to reduce deaths caused by asthma, also it’s a crucial task to educate people about the condition and how to help others when presenting an asthma attack.
How to diagnose Asthma?
Asthma can be clinically diagnosed by a physical evaluation, usually the doctor will be able to tell by listening to the patient’s breathing through a stethoscope. When doing this examination, it’s easy to detect wheezing in the lungs when exhaling. Although that is just the beginning of the diagnosis there are also other tests that may confirm the patient’s condition like x-rays or spirometry study which helps the doctor to see pulmonary function of the patient focusing on the volume and flow of air that is being inhaled or exhaled.
