Stem cell treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus disease

Systemic lupus erythematosus (also called “SLE” and “lupus”) is a chronic autoimmune disease of connective tissues that can affect any part of the body. The immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells and tissue and causes inflammation and tissue damage and, with lupus, this damage occurs most commonly to the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. Lupus is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms come and go and because those symptoms (fever, listlessness, pains in joints or muscles, fatigue, and temporary disorientation) mimic many other diseases.

Lupus still has no known cure. Conventional treatments prescribe corticosteroids and anti-malarial drugs in hopes of either suppressing the symptoms or keeping them from becoming too severe. Patients do not improve under these conventional treatments; the best they can hope for is to make their discomfort more manageable while their bodies continue to decline.
Lately we have seen very encouraging results from stem cell therapies for immunological conditions in general. We believe this is because these therapies correct defects in the patient’s white blood cells, which the National Institutes of Health calls“the ‘soldiers’ of the immune system”. The NIH has reported trials in the U.S. in which the patients “remained free from active lupus and improved continuously after transplantation, without the need for immunosuppressive medications” over the course of three years. The procedure in those trials introduced hematopoietic stem cells into the patient’s peripheral blood just as we have been doing at ProgenCell. Our results have been similarly effective.
An estimated thirty million people suffer from SLE worldwide. ProgenCell offers these people the hope of slowing down the progress of their disease, of preventing the development of future lupus, and of resetting their immune system to its pristine condition. We invite you to
