Meet Godfrey Ingram, former professional soccer Player who underwent stem cell treatment to treat his knees.

During his 15 years professional soccer career in England, Wales and the United States Godfrey Ingram made over 440 career league appearances, and scored over 270 league goals.

Being a professional athlete, especially a soccer player, really took a toll on Godfrey´s knees. He suffered from pain and lack of mobility that really affected not only his athletic performance and efforts, it also affected his quality of life. His struggles came to a point where he knowed that something had to be done.

After Consulting with different orthopedic specialists from all over the world Godrey found out about Stem Cell Therapy and looked into it as an alternative to treat his knees.

According to his own testimony he sought stem cell treatment in clinics from Europe and the United States and none offered him the kind of information and services he was looking for. When he contacted Progencell, he quickly understood that ProgenCell – Stem Cell Therapies premium medical tourism program offered him the kind of service he was looking for and that the doctors from ProgenCell offered the knowledge and expertise where he can place his trust upon.

Misconceptions arise about any emerging medical treatment, but they seem particularly pronounced when it comes to Stem Cell Therapy. Perhaps that’s because the ethical debate that has surrounded stem cell therapy has forced several prejudices in to it.There are many myths about this subject and much erroneous speculation. So we asked Dr. Luis Romero and other members of ProgenCell Scientific Committee to identify the common myths about Stem Cell Therapy today to help people wishing to know more about it separate fact from fiction.

I. Stem Cell Therapy is not Legal. Research with Stem Cells and the therapeutic use of Stem Cells has been happening for a long time now. For over 30 years, HSCT (Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation) has been used to treat people with conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma and several inherited blood disorders. Depending on the country were Stem Cell Therapy is used different laws apply, in the specific case of ProgenCell – Stem Cell Therapies operates under a fully regulated protocol overseen by COFEPRIS (our local version of the FDA). In conclusion, stem cell therapy is legal, nevertheless one should always seek and verify this claims.

II. Stem cells come only from embryos. Embryonic stem cell research is only a portion of the whole stem cell therapy canvas. There are several natural sources and types of Stem Cells. Most stem cells intended for regenerative therapy are generally isolated either from the patient’s bone marrow or from adipose tissue. Stem cells do not come only from embryos.

III. Stem Cell Therapy is Unproven. There is a wide range of diseases for which there are proven treatments based on stem cells. There are a number of studies that have been published in the regenerative medicine and orthopedic literature demonstrating positive results from stem cell therapies.

IV. Stem Cell Therapy can cure anything. Stem Cells are not a cure for everything. However, several studies have shown an  improvement in the for patients suffering from degenerative conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Parkinson’s Alzheimer’s, autism, lupus, macular degeneration, musculoskeletal issues, pulmonary diseases, renal and hepatic failure, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord, erectile dysfunction, among other conditions.

V. All Stem Cells are the same. There are many types of stem cells, and can be classified depending on their source, their potential or their application. The differences among them are striking, not only at the biological level, but also in applications of medical procedures. The regulatory framework for each king of stem cells is also something to be considered.

VI. Stem Cells from the patients own body dont’t work. Adult Stem Cells are currently the most widely used in medicine. It is an unfortunate myth. Bone marrow is an effective and useful source for stem cells  – it contains unique growth factors and significant hematopoietic cells that help drive tissue regeneration.

VII. Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy is more Effective. When talking about potency in the field of stem cell therapy it can be a tricky word and has lead into some misconceptions. Potency does not mean that a certain type of stem cell is more effective than other. Potency refers to capability of the stem cells to become other type of cell, which is not always helpful and can even be dangerous. This is one of the major challenges that must be addressed before embryonic stem cells can be widely and better applied in regenerative medicine.

If you are interested in Stem Cell Therapy or wish to find out if it’s the right choice for you, contact us a FREE Evaluation, our medical team can help you determine if Stem Cell Therapy is right for you.

October is the most exciting month for baseball fans all over the world. The Major League World Series happens every year in October, this year the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals will play each other to determine the Baseball Championship.

For baseball pitchers the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) can become stretched, frayed or torn through the repetitive stress of the throwing motion. Injuries in the UCL are very common among professional pitchers. The most common used treatment for this kind of injuries is the Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, also known as Tommy John surgery (TJS). Is a surgical graft procedure where the ulnar collateral ligament in the medial elbow is replaced with either a tendon from elsewhere in the patient’s body, or with one from a dead donor. This surgical procedure is commonly known as Tommy John Surgery, it is named after the first baseball player to undergo the surgery, retired major league pitcher Tommy John. This surgery for baseball players, full rehabilitation takes about one year for pitchers and about six months for position players. Players typically begin throwing about 16 weeks after surgery. Along the lengthy recovery time There is a risk of damage to the ulnar nerve, and 20% of the players who undergone this surgery are not able to pitch again in the Major Leagues.

Tommy John surgery is a procedure that no professional baseball player wants to have. Fortunately in recent years medical and scientific advancements have proven that stem cell therapy can help. As an alternative to the Tommy John surgery, Stem Cell Treatment Procedures may help alleviate pain and improve function with a simple intrarticular injection procedure. Most patients who receive this treatment experience almost no downtime after our procedures whatsoever.

There is an on growing list of professional who have decided to receive stem cell treatment as an alternative or to prevent injuries or avoid Tommy John Surgery. As shown in the chart above, since 2015 Baseball Tommy John Surgery epidemic dropped, this is due to advancements in stem cell therapies and regenerative medicine. Some of the professional pitchers who have had stem cell therapies are Garret Richards 1, Andrew Heaney 2, Bartolo Colón 3.

If you are considering Tommy John Surgery or other orthopedic surgery for your sports or elbow injury, you might want to learn about how the adult stem cells procedures can help avoid these risky Orthopedic surgeries. Call us today and find out if Stem Cell Therapy is an option for you.

What is Biohacking

Biohacking is a term that has recently become popular, whose meaning has several slopes. To broadly define it refers to the use and study of biology in order to enhance body performance. It encompasses do-it-your-self-biology, grinders, Nutrigenomics, and quantified self, concepts that we need to explore in order to have a grasp of understanding of what biohacking really is. As biohacking starts to appear more often in headlines, it’s worth understanding it and exploring it.  In a nutshell, I think is correct to regard biohacking as the pragmatic use of science in health. So, if you’ve pursued ways to improve your health, that’s biohacking.

DIY Biology

DIY Bio is commonly lead by individuals with training and involvement in scientific fields. These biohackers offer tips and strategies to help non-specialists conduct experiments on themselves outside of a controlled trial condition. The most common purposes or motivations of DIY biohackers are lower costs, simply entertainment, medicine, life extension, and education. From the ethical or social point of view, biohacking aim o revise the notion that one must be an academic with an advanced degree to make any significant contribution to the biology community.

Grinders

In general, grinders progress toward becoming some sort of “cyborgs” by enhancing their bodies with a blend of gadgets, chemical injections, implants, and whatever else they can put into their body to improve it or make it work the way they want it to.

Nutrigenomics

Nutrigenomics refers to using nutrition to hack/take control of the human biology.

This type of biohacking is founded on the idea that your body can be optimized by learning how different nutrients affect your health.

Nutrigenomics also looks at how different nutrients affect how you feel, think, and behave.

Quantified Self

Other terms for using self-tracking data to improve daily functioning are self-tracking, auto-analytics, body hacking, self-quantifying, self-surveillance, and personal informatics. The quantified self refers both to the cultural phenomenon of self-tracking with technology. Quantified Self incorporate technology and data acquisition into daily life, often with the goal of improving physical, mental, and/or emotional performance. The adoption of wearable fitness and sleep trackers such as the Fitbit or the Apple Watch, combined with the increased presence of Internet of Things in healthcare and in exercise equipment, have made self-tracking accessible to a large segment of the population.

Is Biohackig Safe?

Some forms of biohacking are safe and Effective. For example, taking certain supplements or making changes to your diet can be safe. Even some body modifications, like RFID implants, may be safe when overseen by a medical professional.

Some biohacking methodologies border on the unsafe or even illegal. DIY bio and grinder sometimes centers around experiments that aren’t safe or ethical. Experimenting on humans, even if it’s just on yourself, is still considered unsafe because of the unintended consequences or harm that can result.

Can Stem Cell Therapy be considered as some sort of Biohacking?

Yes, stem cell therapy can be considered biohacking. Although it’s extremely important to understand that any kind of substance that goes into your body need to be administered in a technologically safe environment and under a clearly defined legal and ethical framework. Stem Cell Therapy is a proven way to improve your body function. And when used properly by medical professionals, has helped improved the quality of life of thousands of people.

One of the most frequent misconceptions encountered in the field of regenerative medicine is to think of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapies as the equivalent or the same as Stem Cell Treatments. In this blog post I will go over the differences between PRP Therapy and Stem Cell Therapy.

What is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem Cells, on the other hand, are the unspecialized, undifferentiated, immature cells that can divide and differentiate into specific type of cells and tissues. And Stem Cell Therapy refers to the use of these types of cells with therapeutic purposes. What Happens in Stem Cell therapy is that stem cells are directly used to regenerate or repair damaged tissue.  There are different kinds of stem cell therapies that are usually classified according to the source of the stem cells. Currently, the most effective, ethical and scientifically approached type of stem cell therapy is Autologous Stem Cell Therapy, which is when the source of the stem cells is the patient’s own body.  In the human body are several organs with high concentration of stem cells. The Bone Marrow, is one the most accessible and highly concentrated source of stem cells, for this sole reason Bone Marrow derived stem cell therapies are currently the most widely used and effective type of Stem Cell Therapy. Bone Marrow is composed by is composed of hematopoietic cells, marrow adipose tissue, growth factors and supportive stromal cells. When using Bone Marrow, we take advantage of the stem cells within the bone marrow, and the growth factors that help activate stem cells (as in PRP).

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, is a component of blood that contains platelet concentrations above the normal level and includes platelet-related growth factors and plasma-derived fibrinogen.  What happens in PRP therapy is that a simple blood draw is taken from a person, most commonly from the arm, and its put into a test tube to be centrifuged (a process that consists in applying centrifuge force to separate particles from a solution) this results in a 3 layered substance. The top layer consists of a  clear solution of blood plasma; the second layer is called the buffy coat; which is a thin layer of leukocytes (white blood cells) mixed with platelets in the middle, and the third layer is composed of erythrocytes (red blood cells) at the very bottom of the centrifuged tube.

The most important part, the one that we use for PRP therapy is the second or middle layer, the thin layer called the buffy coat. In here there are concentrated platelets, concentrated growth factors and white blood cells. When using PRP we are not using stem cells. What is used to help tissue regenerate and/or repair is the growth factors, that not also help your tissue regenerate they also help by communicating with your body, and letting your body know that stem cells are needed in that part, PRP is some kind of stem cell activation therapy. Platelets are the frontline healing response to injuries as they release growth factors for tissue repair. The effectiveness of PRP relies in the ability of these growth factor to recruit your own body stem cells.

PRP VS Stem Cell Therapy

Both are two effective and commonly used alternatives in regenerative medicine, which have shown promising results to treat a wide range of medical conditions. Both treatments rely on the ability of the body to heal and repair itself. The main difference is that stem cell therapy refers to the direct use of the actual stem cells while PRP is the use platelet-related growth factors that encourage the presence of stem cells.  As you can deduct, PRP Therapy is not remotely as effective as Stem Cell Therapy. To Find out which option is best you (PRP versus Stem Cell Therapy) is important to consider all factors (including the financial aspect). At ProgenCell we can help you determine which one is the best option for your Case. Start your Evaluation Process Now or contact us to schedule your consultation.

Today, August 23rd, airlines and travelers from all over the world celebrate Cheap Flight Day. The reason behind it, is that airlines lower fares on August 23rd. That’s when the season of summer travel is over and airlines historically, begin to lower their prices in order to maintain a consistent flow of passengers. At ProgenCell, we have been working in the medical tourism field for more than a decade, and we have been helping international patients book their flights, lodging reservations and all of the travel logistics. We can brag that in these years we have encounter and overcome several problems, which has provided us with the experience and the know-how to share with you a few tips. So, in order to celebrateCheap Flight Day, here are 10 tips on when, how and where to save money booking flights.

1. Browse in incognito mode. Airlines use your location and even browsing history to determine the fares that you get when you press the “enter” button. By using incognito mode on your browser, you’re not offering any demographic information that might be stored in your browser.

2. Plan ahead. A CheapAir study released in March, which analyzed more than 917 million airfares in 8,000 markets, reveals that there’s a smart, and not so smart, time to book airfare. “On average, the cheapest ticket is available 76 days before departure.

3. Some days are better than others. Some days of the week are cheaper to fly than others. Generally speaking, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are the cheapest.

4. Even August 23rd is the “official” Cheap Flight Day, prices start droping today. So, you should look for deals in the upcoming weeks.

5. Avoid buying separate one way tickets. Airlines prefer customers who are buying round trips, is a myth that you can save money buying separate one way tickets.

6. Set up price alerts in advance. If you’re booking a trip to ProgenCell (whether you are traveling to San Diego Airport, or directly to Tijuana) during specific dates, setting up flight alerts will let you monitor prices and get a feel for the average price.

7. If you are visiting us from the US or Canada, travel to San Diego, a domestic flight is considerable cheapear than traveling directly to Tijuana.

8. Use points or miles. Airline rewards programs are a great way to get free flights, free upgrades, and free companion tickets. No matter how often you fly, you should be signed up for the airline’s or your credit card reward program.

9. Use a secondary email. You probably hate spam as much as I do, so I recommend using a secondary email cause you will start receiving emails. This probably won’t save you money, as I promised, but it will save you time, and you know the saying, time is…

10. Check out this tool from students at the MIT Senseable City Lab. It’s called “Escape” and it shows you what the cheapest flights to different spots are on given dates. The idea is to help you narrow down your vacation choices based on price. This is extremely helpful when the purpose of your travel is pure pleasure and your destination is not fixed.

If you are in the process of booking your flight or planning your travel to ProgenCell, be sure to contact us, and make use of our travel concierge service. Our staff is composed by medical tourism specialist who have the experience and knowledge to help you save money and make the best of your medical travel. When people think of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), they often think of stiff, painful joints. This autoimmune condition happens when the body mistakes its own joint tissues as foreign ones and attacks them producing swelling of the joints, which leads to stiffness and pain, and when it goes out of control or lasts for long periods of time, in the so called “flares”, bone structures can be permanently deformed. Other complications can also be noticed in other parts of the body such as eyes, lungs, heart, blood vessels and skin. It is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just the joints.

Young woman holding an elderly woman’s hands.

There isn’t a cure found yet for RA, medication helps control it, but it has to be taken for life and it comes with unpleasant side effects. Most complications of rheumatoid arthritis can be managed; however, patients need to pay attention to early symptoms, to help the diagnosis and early treatment.

Stem cells can help prevent inflammation and decrease flares’ intensity and frequency. Once the complications related to RA emerge, stem cells can sometimes reverse them as long as the damage isn’t permanent.

Even though stem cell treatment and its research have been involved in debates for years, scientists and doctors have proved their benefits and are excited about the results on inflammatory conditions.

Some complications of RA are:

Skin

Patients might develop tissue lumps or “nodules”. They can appear on the skin, particularly on heels, fingers, elbows, knees or forearms. They grow gradually and unexpectedly and can also be detected in the lungs.

Lung Disease
